Comedy Misses the Mark in ‘Mithramandali’

In recent times, small-budget films have been faring better than big-budget ones at the box office. Recently, Mirai, Little Hearts, and Kishkindhapuri joined this list of successful small films. This Diwali season, the box office seems to be dominated mostly by small films. The first among them is Mithramandali. The film, releasing on Thursday, had its premiere shows in Hyderabad on Wednesday night. The movie Mithramandali features Priyadarshi, Niharika, Vennela Kishore, Satya, Vishnu, Ragh Mayur, and Prasad Behra in key roles. Directed by Vijayendra, the film is presented by producer Bunny Vas.

Right at the beginning of the movie, it is made clear that there isn’t much of a story. True to that statement, there’s really no need to think much about the plot. The film entirely revolves around a single community — a group of friends belonging to that caste. Ganesh, who believes his community is very special, tries to contest and win as an MLA with the strength of his caste. His daughter, Niharika, is the heroine. When Ganesh learns that his daughter eloped with her lover, he worries that his family’s honor will be ruined. To cover it up, he files a police complaint saying his daughter has been kidnapped. The rest of the movie follows Ganesh’s efforts to secretly bring his daughter back and protect his caste’s reputation.

Though the film has many actors known for good comic timing, the comedy doesn’t work well overall. Since there’s no strong story, the movie tries to rely on humor throughout — but it only works here and there. On the other hand, VTV Ganesh’s portrayal of Ganesh feels over the top to the audience. Heroine Niharika doesn’t have a very impactful role either. Satya’s “important character” creates some laughs occasionally, but his repeated antics become monotonous. Vishnu brings a few laughs in parts, and Prasad Behra impresses with his performance. Vamsi, appearing as Vijay Antony’s character, manages to evoke a few chuckles too. Beyond that, there isn’t much to talk about this movie.
