Cricket fans in India are known for their immense admiration for cricketers. Star cricketers, in particular, enjoy a fan following comparable to that of Bollywood heroes, and their popularity is unmatched. The biopic on former Indian captain MS Dhoni, who has achieved numerous milestones in cricket, was a blockbuster at the box office. Titled MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, the film was made on a budget of nearly ₹100 crore and went on to gross around ₹215 crore worldwide. It was released on September 30, 2016. Now, another biopic is set to hit the big screen, this time on former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, fondly known as "Dada" by cricket fans. The makers unveiled the film's first look on Wednesday.
The first-look poster recreates Ganguly's iconic celebration on the Lord's balcony after India defeated England in the NatWest Trophy final on July 13, 2002, with actor Rajkummar Rao recreating the memorable jersey-waving moment. The celebration had created a huge sensation at the time. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, the film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on May 14 next year. Apart from captaining the Indian cricket team, Sourav Ganguly also holds several records as a cricketer. The film will be released with the title "Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story" and the tagline, "He Didn't Just Play the Game, He Changed It." The film is being presented by Gulshan Kumar, Bhushan Kumar, T-Series, and DBL Entertainment.
