Chandrababu Naidu be forced to act more cautiously regarding the promotion of TDP National Working President and minister Nara Lokesh? These questions have now become a hot topic in Andhra Pradesh’s political circles—and there are strong reasons behind it. In Tamil Nadu, M. K. Stalin is serving as Chief Minister from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, while his son Udhayanidhi Stalin holds the position of Deputy Chief Minister and manages key portfolios. However, Udhayanidhi has faced significant criticism, including allegations of corruption and controversy over several of his statements, which critics say have damaged the party’s image. Additionally, the DMK has been accused of turning the party into a “family affair.”
A somewhat similar atmosphere is being observed in Andhra Pradesh. Even though Nara Lokesh is not officially the Deputy Chief Minister, there is a perception within TDP leaders themselves that he is functioning as a “de facto” or acting Chief Minister. It is widely believed among both party circles and officials that no major files move forward in key government departments without approval from Lokesh or his team. Moreover, there are strong allegations that several individuals are operating behind the scenes, influencing decisions in crucial departments. Another important issue is that accusations of settlements between top government figures and individuals involved in scams during the previous YSR Congress Party regime are not going down well with TDP leaders and cadre.
In Visakhapatnam, party insiders believe that lack of action in land scam cases and other issues is due to behind-the-scenes dealings. Recently, Nara Lokesh was elevated within the party and appointed as National Working President. There has long been speculation within party circles that he could be made Chief Minister at least two years before the next elections. Party leaders also say that there is considerable pressure from the family on Chandrababu Naidu regarding this move. It remains to be seen whether Chandrababu Naidu will tread cautiously after observing the Tamil Nadu election results or proceed as originally planned.
Another key issue drawing criticism is Nara Lokesh’s approach to allocating high-value lands—worth hundreds of crores—in areas like Visakhapatnam to corporate and real estate companies. Lokesh has repeatedly stated that land will be allotted at just 99 paise per acre if companies promise to generate employment, calling it a policy of the government. Even party leaders believe that such statements could have negative repercussions. There is also no proper mechanism within the government to verify how many jobs these companies actually create after acquiring land worth hundreds of crores. The government tends to rely on figures provided by the companies on paper, while the real numbers rarely come to light. In fact, companies have been following this model for quite some time to acquire valuable land.
