Adani Group Cleared in US Cases: What Happens to Jagan and SECI Allegations Now?

All the cases registered against Gautam Adani and Adani Group companies in the United States have reportedly been closed, and this has also been officially announced. With the closure of these cases in the U.S., there is now growing discussion that YSR Congress Party chief and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has also moved into a “safe zone.” It is well known that cases were registered in the United States against Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani over allegations that Adani Group companies paid massive bribes worth thousands of crores of rupees to influential political leaders and officials in India in order to secure power project contracts. The cases were reportedly filed on charges that Adani Group companies concealed crucial information while raising funds from American investors.

                                    Now that these cases have been closed in the U.S., there is increasing speculation that former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has also become politically safe. Since its days in the opposition, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has alleged that there were major irregularities in the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) agreements and claimed that these deals would impose a financial burden of nearly ₹1 lakh crore on the people of Andhra Pradesh over the next 25 years. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had even highlighted the issue through a PowerPoint presentation. He also remarked that Jagan Mohan Reddy had been caught “red-handed like a laddu” in the SECI agreements controversy. Chandrababu Naidu further stated that a deeper investigation would be conducted into the matter.

                               However, despite all the criticism and allegations made earlier, the Andhra Pradesh government ultimately decided to continue the agreements. Although the contracts are officially under SECI, Adani Group companies are among the major power suppliers involved in the deal. On one hand, the Chandrababu government claimed that the agreements would burden the public with nearly ₹1 lakh crore in costs. On the other hand, Andhra Pradesh Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar stated that cancelling the agreements would force the state government to pay nearly ₹3,000 crore in compensation. In the end, critics argue that the government appeared willing to let the public bear a burden of ₹1 lakh crore rather than pay ₹3,000 crore as compensation itself. According to political circles, since Adani companies are the biggest beneficiaries of the agreements, the Chandrababu government effectively backed away from taking any strong action. This is also linked to the widely discussed perception that Adani shares a close relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

                                          Despite previously claiming that Jagan Mohan Reddy had gained massive benefits through these agreements and that they had clear evidence against him, political opponents are now allegedly remaining silent on the issue. With the Adani cases in the United States now reportedly closed, discussions are intensifying that Jagan has effectively become politically secure in Andhra Pradesh as well. Because of this, political observers say that not only the Tirupati Laddu controversy, but even the so-called “SECI Laddu case,” has effectively been closed. There is also discussion within TDP circles that both the Modi government at the Centre and the Chandrababu Naidu government in Andhra Pradesh are making efforts to protect Jagan Mohan Reddy in several sensitive cases.
