Tamil Nadu Political Drama: Governor Refuses Green Signal for Vijay Swearing-In

Dramatic political developments continue to unfold in Tamil Nadu over the formation of the new government. Even after TVK chief Vijay met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar once again on Thursday, uncertainty over the swearing-in ceremony still remains. The Governor made it clear that the oath-taking ceremony would take place only if Vijay proves the support of 118 MLAs required to form the government. After Thursday’s meeting, Raj Bhavan officially stated that sufficient legislative support is mandatory for government formation and added that TVK had not submitted complete details regarding MLA support. With this, indications are emerging that the political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu may continue for a few more days.

                                              In fact, after Vijay’s second meeting with the Governor, reports widely circulated that the Governor had given the green signal for the swearing-in ceremony. However, the Raj Bhavan statement clarified that there was no truth in those reports. TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu elections, and Vijay had even finalized arrangements to take oath as Chief Minister on Thursday morning. However, the event was postponed after the Governor reportedly informed him that permission to form the government would only be granted after submitting proof of support from the required 118 MLAs. While TVK won 108 seats on its own, the Congress party, which has five MLAs, has already announced support for Vijay. On Thursday, Vijay once again met the Tamil Nadu Governor and argued that, as the leader of the single largest party, he should be invited to form the government and allowed to prove his majority on the Assembly floor. However, the Governor reportedly rejected that request as well.

                                  Strong criticism is now being directed at the Governor, with many arguing that a majority should be tested on the floor of the Assembly and not before the Governor. Political observers and opposition voices are calling the Governor’s stand inappropriate. The Governor’s refusal to allow Vijay’s swearing-in has triggered major political unrest in Tamil Nadu. In particular, Vijay’s fans and youth supporters have been posting on social media calling for a massive human chain protest at Marina Beach against the Governor’s decision. Following these developments, police officials have also been put on alert. Meanwhile, DMK chief M. K. Stalin held discussions with alliance partners. According to DMK sources, the party has left the decision on supporting Vijay’s party to its allies. As a result, parties including VCK, CPI, and CPM are expected to hold meetings soon to decide whether to extend support to TVK. Political circles believe these parties may announce their decision on Friday.
