Rajya Sabha Row: Big Test for Pawan Kalyan as Party Faces Internal Heat!

Update: 2026-04-13 04:49 GMT

The Jana Sena Party, a key ally in the Andhra Pradesh coalition government, is now facing intense internal debate over who will be nominated for its first Rajya Sabha seat. The big question doing the rounds is: will party chief and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan follow the path of “corporate-style politics” like other parties, or will he reward loyal party workers who have toiled for the party?. This issue has become a hot topic within Jana Sena. Both the Telugu Desam Party and the YSR Congress Party have, in the past, allotted Rajya Sabha seats to wealthy industrialists and contractors. In fact, the YSR Congress Party had surprised even its own leaders by nominating Parimal Nathwani, a director in Reliance Industries, to the Rajya Sabha. It is widely known that in regional parties, Rajya Sabha nominations are largely at the discretion of the party chief.

For Jana Sena’s lone seat, the name of controversial industrialist Lingamaneni Ramesh has been doing the rounds for quite some time. So far, no other name has gained similar traction. However, if Pawan Kalyan chooses to allocate this crucial seat to Lingamaneni Ramesh—whether due to past support such as providing land for film projects or other behind-the-scenes assistance—it could spark serious unrest within the party, a senior Jana Sena leader indicated. There is already significant dissatisfaction among several leaders over Pawan Kalyan’s functioning. If the seat goes to Lingamaneni, this discontent may intensify, and some leaders may even come out openly with criticism, according to party insiders. Many within Jana Sena believe that awarding the Rajya Sabha seat to Lingamaneni Ramesh, as currently being speculated, could inevitably lead to internal conflict.

Meanwhile, the terms of four Rajya Sabha members from Andhra Pradesh are set to end in June, and all these seats are expected to go to coalition partners. Official sources indicate that the election notification is likely after May 15. Adding a new twist, apart from Lingamaneni Ramesh, the name of another industrialist—said to be close to Pawan Kalyan and also a prominent film producer—has recently surfaced in party circles. In any case, Jana Sena leaders believe that the decision Pawan Kalyan takes regarding this Rajya Sabha seat will be extremely crucial for the party’s future.
