Is Jana Sena genuinely looking to strengthen its presence in Telangana? Will the party contest the next Assembly elections in the state? Or is the sudden focus of Jana Sena chief and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Telangana politics aimed primarily at helping the BJP in the upcoming GHMC elections? These questions are currently being debated in political circles. It is well known that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena, and the BJP are alliance partners in Andhra Pradesh. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Hyderabad, he made highly unusual visits to the residences of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. The visits were officially described as courtesy calls, but many political observers viewed them through a political lens.
A significant section of political analysts believes the move was part of the BJP's strategy to attract TDP and Jana Sena supporters ahead of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections. Statements made by several TDP and Jana Sena leaders in recent weeks have further strengthened this perception. Any political party or leader is free to hold meetings and contest elections anywhere in the country. However, controversial remarks made in the past about a particular region can have a lasting political impact. Only recently, Pawan Kalyan sparked controversy by claiming that coconut trees in Konaseema were drying up due to the "evil eye" of people from Telangana. Earlier, he had also stated that he could not eat properly for several days after the formation of Telangana. Both comments triggered significant political backlash.
Now that Pawan Kalyan has suddenly decided to focus on Telangana politics, these earlier remarks have once again come under scrutiny. Meanwhile, the Telangana government led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy denied permission for the "Telangana Nava Nirmana Sankalpa Sabha – Jana Sena Sadhak Sammelanam" scheduled to be held by Pawan Kalyan in Hyderabad on June 2. The decision has triggered a political controversy. Jana Sena argues that denying permission for an indoor event involving around 2,000 party activists is unfair. The party pointed out that numerous cultural, political, and corporate events are regularly conducted at the Sandhya Convention Hall in Gachibowli. It questioned why issues such as parking and law and order, which had never been cited before, were suddenly being used as reasons to deny permission for its event.
Police officials, however, maintain that the decision was taken to ensure smooth conduct of Telangana Formation Day celebrations and to prevent potential law-and-order issues that could arise due to Pawan Kalyan's past remarks about Telangana. Jana Sena has approached the court challenging the government's decision. More importantly, political circles are now intensely debating why Pawan Kalyan is suddenly focusing so much attention on Telangana politics. Questions are being raised about his broader political strategy and what exactly he hopes to achieve through this renewed engagement with Telangana.
