Tesla Makes Its Indian Debut: First Showroom Opens in Mumbai

India’s first Tesla car showroom was opened on Tuesday in Mumbai. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis participated in the event and welcomed Tesla electric cars into the country. From this very showroom, Tesla has made the Model Y electric car available in the Indian market. The price of this car is sixty lakh rupees. For the past few years, Tesla has been trying to enter the Indian market. A few months ago, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the United States, Tesla CEO Elon Musk met with Modi and discussed several issues. At that time, it was well known that Musk was very close to U.S. President Donald Trump. For whatever reasons, the Indian government recently significantly reduced the import duties on electric cars imported from the U.S. and other countries. This is a development that benefits Tesla.
Tesla has set up its showroom in the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai. In the first phase, the company is releasing two car models into the Indian market. In fact, Tesla also brought forward the proposal of setting up a car manufacturing unit in India. Several rounds of discussions were also held with government officials regarding this issue. However, the matter of setting up a Tesla unit in India has not materialized. Several states even competed to offer Tesla land and special incentives for the unit. But the company has not yet taken a final decision regarding setting up the unit. It is said that there is no possibility of that happening any time soon. After Mumbai, Tesla is likely to set up its second showroom in the national capital, Delhi.
