Kuwait Airport Hit by Iranian Drones Amid Escalating US-Iran Conflict
Iran has intensified its attacks on U.S. military installations in the Gulf region. Angered by what it claims is the support being extended by Gulf nations to U.S. operations against Iran, Tehran reportedly launched a drone attack on Terminal One of Kuwait International Airport on Wednesday. The attack caused significant damage to the terminal and left a large number of passengers injured. Authorities stated that one Indian national was among those killed in the incident. Several passengers and airport staff members sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. Following the attack, Kuwaiti authorities declared an emergency and suspended flight operations at Kuwait International Airport. Incoming flights were diverted to other airports as a precautionary measure. The development comes despite the existence of a peace agreement, with the United States continuing airstrikes on key locations inside Iran in the name of self-defense over the past several days.
Iran has responded with retaliatory strikes whenever the U.S. has carried out attacks. This time, it directly targeted Kuwait International Airport. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the strike, stating that the attack was carried out in protest against U.S. air operations. The IRGC also warned that its attacks on Gulf nations would continue, raising concerns about how the conflict could further escalate. In response to the growing security threat, the governments of Kuwait and Bahrain issued advisories urging residents to remain indoors and stay in safe locations. Officials reported that a total of 63 people were injured in the attack on Kuwait Airport, with seven of them in critical condition. Authorities said the healthcare system is fully prepared to provide continuous medical care to all victims.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he wants to meet Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei directly. He remarked that Khamenei's influence over Iran's decision-making process is clearly visible. Trump reiterated that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons and claimed that Iran had also agreed to that principle. Despite such statements, questions remain about why a final peace agreement has yet to materialize. At the same time, some observers remain skeptical of Trump's remarks, arguing that his statements cannot always be taken at face value. Iran has also repeatedly accused Trump of making claims that do not accurately reflect the facts, further complicating efforts to reach a lasting settlement.
