Is the Modi Government’s Downfall Beginning?
Has the decline of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led Central government begun? The series of recent developments has sparked discussions that this may indeed be the case. For years, almost all major media organizations in the country have maintained that there is no political force capable of taking on Modi. The primary reason for this perception is the BJP's consistent electoral success across states. In politics, victory is the ultimate yardstick. Regardless of the criticism or allegations surrounding a victory, only the result matters. There is no doubt that the BJP has been registering one electoral success after another across the country. History has repeatedly shown that when the same party remains in power for a prolonged period, several adverse consequences tend to emerge. Telangana is a clear example.
The people elected the BRS to power twice, considering it the party that fought for and achieved the creation of Telangana. However, the party's top leadership eventually began acting as though Telangana belonged exclusively to them. As a result, the people voted the BRS out of power. The Modi government at the Centre has now also completed nearly twelve years in office. For a long time, there have been allegations that power in the Modi government has been centralized in the hands of just two or three individuals, unlike ever before. This model has continued since Modi's first term. Despite this, neither Union ministers nor BJP MPs have dared to speak openly about it. People may tolerate corruption in governments, but they are far less willing to overlook corruption in temples that they deeply revere, as it is closely tied to their religious sentiments. BJP leaders have long projected the image that "Ram means BJP and BJP means Ram," deriving significant political benefit from that narrative.
However, reports that donations and offerings made by devotees at the Ayodhya Ram Temple have allegedly been diverted have come as a major shock for the Modi government. Reports suggest that the diverted funds amount to several crores of rupees. Apart from this, members of the temple trust have also been accused of committing several irregularities in the name of Ayodhya. Although the Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and says action is being taken, there are expectations that the political damage to the BJP could be significant. Just as cracks in the Kaleshwaram Barrage became a major issue before the Telangana Assembly elections, the alleged diversion of Ayodhya temple donations and the NEET paper leak have now become issues that could damage the Modi government's reputation.
Meanwhile, allegations have surfaced in Madhya Pradesh that companies linked to the family of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav purchased as many as 168 acres of land. More recently, reports of another paper leak have emerged in BJP-ruled Maharashtra, prompting the state government to postpone the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET). At the same time, despite not requiring the support of regional parties to implement its agenda, the Modi government has continued to split several key regional parties across the country. This has reportedly generated considerable resentment against the BJP, particularly among the middle class. The BJP government has also been criticized for focusing more on politics than on addressing issues such as paper leaks and other public concerns. "If the opposition fails to stop those in power, nature will do it. That is exactly what is happening to the BJP now," a senior leader remarked. It remains to be seen what other major developments unfold in the coming days.
