BJP Sweeps West Bengal, Deals Crushing Blow to Mamata Banerjee’s TMC
In the recently concluded Assembly elections, it can be said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) primarily focused on West Bengal. For the past several years, the BJP has been trying to defeat the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and hoist its flag in West Bengal, but those efforts had not succeeded until now. This time, however, the BJP executed its strategy with precision and achieved success. In simple terms, the party set a clear target and managed to decisively strike at the TMC. Growing public dissatisfaction with the TMC government, which has been in power in West Bengal for the past 15 years, also worked in BJP’s favor. Additionally, factors such as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists carried out by the Election Commission created difficulties for the TMC. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly opposed the move before the elections, alleging that voters were being arbitrarily removed to benefit the BJP. She even approached the Supreme Court over the issue, but it did not yield significant results.
After the election schedule for five states was announced, the Election Commission made unusually large-scale changes in West Bengal, including the transfer of officials—far more than in any other state. Allegations surfaced that these moves were part of a targeted strategy. Moreover, in an unprecedented move, around 240,000 central armed forces personnel were deployed in West Bengal for the elections—far higher than in any other state. By leaving no opportunity unused, the BJP effectively implemented its strategies and secured a decisive victory. At the same time, the BJP recognized that defeating Mamata Banerjee would require more than just strategy. Despite often criticizing free welfare schemes, the party made several generous promises in West Bengal. While the TMC currently provides ₹1,500 to women in the state, the BJP promised to increase this to ₹3,000 in its manifesto. It also announced free bus travel and several other welfare measures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah gave special focus to the West Bengal elections compared to other states and successfully achieved their target. According to the results announced on Monday, the BJP secured a massive victory, exceeding expectations. By around 8 PM, the BJP had already won 195 seats and was leading in 13 more, while the TMC had won 70 seats and was leading in 9. Out of the 293 constituencies that went to polls, the BJP is heading toward winning as many as 208 seats—marking a landslide victory for the party.
