Cinema to Politics: Vijay’s Rise vs Pawan Kalyan’s Struggles Explained

Both are heroes. They come from neighboring states. Both enjoy immense popularity among the youth. But when it comes to politics, the difference between them is striking. By now, it’s easy to guess who they are. One is Jana Sena Party chief and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and the other is Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay.Vijay is also a hugely popular actor in Tamil Nadu with a massive fan following. When Pawan Kalyan founded the Jana Sena Party and contested the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections for the first time, he lost in both constituencies he contested. Out of 140 seats contested by Jana Sena, the party managed to win just one seat—Rajole. In contrast, Tamil actor Vijay, within a short time of launching his party, achieved an unexpected and sensational victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, creating a major political upheaval in the state.

After announcing his party, Vijay reportedly faced significant political pressure. There were widespread reports that the ruling party at the Centre, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), tried to pressure him into forming an alliance ahead of the elections. Despite facing multiple pressures, Vijay did not compromise on alliances and chose to contest independently. His decision has now paid off with sensational results. This has become a major talking point across the country. Vijay’s TVK party not only challenged the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which has a stronghold in Tamil Nadu politics, but also dealt a heavy blow to parties like All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), emerging victorious in a dramatic fashion.

On the other hand, in the 2024 elections, Jana Sena contested in alliance with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the BJP, winning all 21 seats it contested and achieving a 100% strike rate—a record in itself. However, following the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results announced on Monday, there has been widespread debate about the contrasting political approaches of Vijay and Pawan Kalyan. This has now become a hot topic on social media as well. There is growing discussion that the Tamil Nadu election results could significantly impact Pawan Kalyan in the coming days. One reason is that Jana Sena, despite being an independent party, has repeatedly stated that it will continue its alliance with TDP and BJP for the next 15 years.

Pawan Kalyan reiterates this on every platform, which reportedly does not sit well with many Jana Sena leaders and cadre. Politically speaking, Vijay is considered much more junior compared to Pawan Kalyan. Moreover, Pawan Kalyan also enjoys indirect support from the fan base of his brother, Chiranjeevi. Despite this, he has not been able to make a strong independent impact in Andhra Pradesh politics. This is why comparisons between Vijay and Pawan Kalyan are currently dominating political discussions. Vijay is 51 years old, while Pawan Kalyan is 54.
