Municipal Polls Boost TDP-Jana Sena: Will Leadership Become More Centralised?

The alliance has delivered a spectacular performance in the Andhra Pradesh municipal elections. There is no doubt that these results will give a significant political boost to the coalition government, which still has nearly two-and-a-half years left in office. Politically, these results can certainly be considered outstanding. The results in the municipal elections have followed a pattern similar to the alliance's victory in the Assembly elections. There is also a possibility that the same trend could continue in the upcoming ZPTC and MPTC elections. So far, everything looks good for the alliance. However, a discussion is now gaining momentum among TDP and Jana Sena leaders over whether key alliance leaders, including Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Minister Nara Lokesh, will become even more assertive following the confidence gained from these results.

TDP chief and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is not making time even for senior leaders and MLAs during his current term. They get an opportunity to speak with him only occasionally. Coming to Jana Sena chief and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, there is a feeling among Jana Sena leaders themselves that nobody knows when he will actually discharge his responsibilities as a minister and that he does not even meet the MLAs of his own party. There is also a discussion among TDP leaders about whether Nara Lokesh, the party's National Working President and a minister, who is widely perceived to be unofficially running almost the entire government apart from one or two departments, will become even more aggressive in the coming days.

Party leaders say that, just like Chandrababu, Nara Lokesh too is largely ignoring senior leaders and managing everything through his own team. There were differences between the TDP and Jana Sena on several occasions over seat allocation for the municipal elections. Some leaders had expressed doubts about whether these differences would affect the election results. Whatever the reasons may be, the alliance has once again achieved a clean sweep in these elections. This could lead the top leaders of the respective parties to believe that their political strategies are now unchallenged. Moreover, there are concerns among TDP leaders that, with this electoral confidence, the leadership may not tolerate anyone expressing views contrary to what they say.

There is already a feeling that decision-making in both the parties and the government is highly centralised. Leaders believe that this trend could become even more pronounced in the coming days. Politically, the alliance has secured good results in these elections. There is no doubt about that. However, the same situation prevailed when the YSRCP was in power. At that time, the YSRCP too swept the local body elections. Everyone has seen what happened in the subsequent Assembly elections. It is a known fact that local body elections in any state generally favour the ruling party. Urban voters tend to support the ruling party, reasoning that voting for opposition candidates instead of those belonging to a government that still has nearly two-and-a-half years in office would not bring them much benefit. The same trend was witnessed in these elections as well. How the alliance converts this latest victory into a political advantage will become clear only in the future.
