Has TDP Turned Into YSRCP? AP Local Body Polls Spark Debate!
X

There is only one major topic of discussion in Andhra Pradesh politics now. Many people believe that there is hardly any difference left between the YSRCP and the TDP. There was a time when the TDP enjoyed a very positive image among middle-class people as well as educated sections of society. However, the situation now appears to be changing. There is growing discussion, even among TDP leaders, that the two parties are not very different, not only in terms of governance and corruption but also in their political approach. When the YSRCP was in power, it resorted to every possible tactic to secure more seats in the local body elections held during its tenure. The TDP, on the other hand, virtually threw up its hands and boycotted the elections altogether. However, some party leaders still contested. Taking advantage of its position in power, the YSRCP targeted several key constituencies, including Kuppam, the home constituency of then Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. Based on those results, the party tried to project the TDP as politically weakened. However, everyone saw how the results turned out in the 2024 Assembly elections.

The way the coalition government, particularly the TDP, is handling the local body elections now has triggered a major controversy. The criticism is that the ruling alliance is going even further than the YSRCP did during the previous local body elections. In what appears to be a counter to the YSRCP's targeting of Kuppam at the time, the TDP is now paying special attention to selected areas, including Kadapa district, Jagan Mohan Reddy's home district, and Pulivendula, his home constituency. The party is pursuing its political strategy with a special focus on these areas. Critics allege that the TDP is following the same approach adopted by the YSRCP when it was in power, attempting to politically weaken its rival. The matter has eventually reached the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court's comments on the Andhra Pradesh local body elections can be seen as a setback to the image of the coalition government. Nobody would claim that the YSRCP acted perfectly or always followed proper procedures. However, despite the coalition government's considerable strength and its use of official power on multiple fronts, YSRCP leaders are continuing their fight without backing down. While the TDP completely stayed away from the elections at the time, the YSRCP is now attempting to stand its ground and fight.

Another important point is that, during the YSRCP's tenure, some of its leaders subjected local TDP leaders and party cadres to severe hardships. After coming to power, some TDP leaders repeatedly urged Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu to take action against YSRCP leaders who had acted arbitrarily. However, according to TDP leaders, Naidu reprimanded those who raised the issue, asking whether the government had come to power to settle scores and whether they wanted to bring disrepute to the government for the sake of their own political interests. A minister believes that this has also become one of the reasons why local YSRCP leaders are now standing firm and challenging the ruling party during the elections, even though they are no longer in power. There is also discussion within the TDP that some party MLAs in several constituencies have reached compromises with local YSRCP leaders and former MLAs. A senior leader observed that just as some compromises appear to have taken place at the higher levels, certain leaders have behaved similarly at the district level as well. After witnessing the incidents unfolding in several districts during the local body elections, even within official circles, there is growing discussion that Andhra Pradesh politics shows little sign of changing.
