Ram Temple Trust Beyond Centre, UP Government Control!
The alleged theft of donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple has triggered a nationwide controversy over the past few days. New details related to the case continue to emerge almost every day. Besides the alleged misappropriation of donations, allegations have also surfaced that some individuals fraudulently projected government land as private property and siphoned off crores of rupees. However, despite several figures and claims being circulated, there is still no clarity on the exact amount of donations that may have been misappropriated. There appears to be little possibility of the full extent of the alleged diversion of donations becoming known in the future as well. The controversy surrounding the alleged donation theft has now assumed political significance. It is increasingly being viewed as an issue that could politically embarrass the Narendra Modi-led Central government in the coming days. The government is facing criticism that while it sought votes in the name of Lord Ram, it has remained silent even after allegations surfaced that donations made in the name of Lord Ram were allegedly misappropriated.
According to the latest developments, there are clear indications that the case may not progress much further. The primary reason is that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has clarified that the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust is an independent body constituted in accordance with the Supreme Court's Ayodhya verdict. The MHA stated that the Trust receives no financial assistance from either the Central Government or the Uttar Pradesh Government and is not under the administrative control of either government. According to a report published by The Times of India, the Ministry had conveyed this position earlier to the Central Information Commission (CIC). The report stated that the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust functions completely independently of both the Central and Uttar Pradesh governments. It added that the Uttar Pradesh government is responsible only for law and order and crowd management at the temple, similar to the role it plays at other temples.
According to The Times of India, in its submission to the CIC on February 20 last year, the MHA stated that the Trust takes its decisions independently and that all administrative powers are vested in its permanent trustees. In early 2024, RTI applicant Neeraj Sharma sought details of the Trust's Public Information Officers from the Central Government. However, the MHA rejected his request, prompting Sharma to approach the Delhi High Court in February 2024. In its final order, the CIC held that the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust is an independent body constituted in accordance with the Supreme Court's Ayodhya verdict. It reiterated that the Trust neither receives financial assistance from the Central or Uttar Pradesh governments nor functions under their administrative control.
Another important question that arises is this: if, as the Ministry of Home Affairs has stated, the Uttar Pradesh government has no administrative control over the Trust, then on what basis can a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the state investigate the alleged donation theft?. Attention is now focused on the Trust meeting scheduled for July 6, where it remains to be seen what decision will be taken regarding the alleged donation theft controversy. The Trust has a total of 15 members, of whom four are ex-officio members, and they do not have voting rights.
