“9,100 MW Power Projects Land in One Family’s Lap in Andhra Pradesh”

In Andhra Pradesh, under the coalition government, all contracts are going only to selected companies — even the power projects are being allotted to chosen firms. Any official in the government would admit that there are a lot of calculations behind this. Any industrialist, before starting a company, carefully considers many factors. They know well in advance the profits and losses in that particular industry. Those who have been in the field for long understand these matters clearly. But the way the promoters of Navayuga Group are moving is rather strange. Initially, Navayuga Group promoter Chinta Visweswara Rao’s company Chinta Green Energy was granted approval for a 360 MW Pumped Storage Project (PSP) at Koppolu near Kondapuram Mandal in Kadapa district. Orders were issued on June 30, 2025. But before even a month passed, the company wrote a letter saying “Not 360 MW, we will build a 2,400 MW PSP at the same place.” Immediately, this proposal received approvals from both the SIPB (State Investment Promotion Board) and the state cabinet.
Even power department officials are baffled, asking — why did the company first propose 360 MW? If everything was the same, why suddenly increase it to 2,400 MW? One senior IAS officer remarked: “Is this governance… or children’s play?” Water for this project will be drawn from Gandikota reservoir. For the initial 360 MW project, 2.79 million cubic meters (MCM) of water was allotted. Now, with the increased capacity, this allotment has shot up to 38 MCM. Similarly, the government under Chandrababu’s leadership has also approved capacity enhancement for another project. Navayuga Engineering Company Limited’s Pumped Storage Project at Guzili near Alluri Sitarama Raju district was originally approved at 1,500 MW, but has now been raised to 2,400 MW. Another peculiarity: this company was first allotted a 1,400 MW project via a G.O. on February 7, 2025. Later, Chinta Green Energy in Kadapa was allotted its project on June 30, 2025.
Yet, both these companies wrote letters on the very same day — July 22, 2025 — seeking to enhance their capacities, and both quickly got approvals from the SIPB chaired by the CM, and then the cabinet gave the green signal. Officials say this clearly looks like a pre-planned exercise. Before this capacity hike, Navayuga Visweswara Rao’s family companies had a total of 6,160 MW worth of power projects allotted in Andhra Pradesh. With the latest enhancements, the total has reached 9,100 MW. Even senior officials are stunned to see such a massive allotment of power projects going to just one family’s companies.
