Love Insurance Kompany Review: Bold Idea, Weak Execution

In the film Robot, Rajinikanth sings about a heart emerging from metal. Now, director Vignesh Shivan takes a futuristic leap by introducing the idea of love calculations and ratings through an app. With a completely fresh and untouched concept, he brings Love Insurance Kompany to the screen. The film stars Pradeep Ranganathan as the hero and Krithi Shetty as the heroine, while S. J. Suryah appears as the head of the Love Insurance Kompany app. Love is typically an emotional experience—but what happens when a machine-like app starts deciding it? Can there be any truth in such a system? The movie revolves around these intriguing questions. Pradeep Ranganathan’s previous films have all been box-office successes, which raised strong expectations for this movie as well. He has also built a decent market in Telugu cinema.

After facing multiple delays, the film finally released on Friday. In simple terms, it is a futuristic love story set in the year 2040. The Love Insurance Kompany app not only gives love ratings but also determines compatibility between individuals. Interestingly, the hero and heroine first meet at this very app company, and their relationship gradually turns into love. However, like many others, the heroine—who spends much of her time on her mobile—checks their love rating on the app and finds it shockingly low, just three points. This leads her to break up with the hero. What follows is the hero’s fight against the app and how their love story unfolds with multiple twists. From a concept and storyline perspective, this is a completely new and unexplored idea. However, it must be said that director Vignesh Shivan falls short in presenting this novel concept in an engaging manner.

The first half of the movie feels slow and somewhat boring. The film picks up pace only after the breakup, particularly from the interval block onward. Pradeep Ranganathan delivers a convincing performance and does full justice to his role. Krithi Shetty also gets a solid character. S. J. Surya impresses with his unique style as the head of the Love Insurance Kompany. The only major relief in the film comes from Yogi Babu’s comedy. On the production front, the makers have not compromised anywhere. Despite coming up with a fresh concept and an interesting title, Love Insurance Kompany fails to fully engage the audience.
