Telangana Municipal Polls: The Real Test for CM Revanth Reddy!

Update: 2026-02-09 12:35 GMT

After the Congress party came to power in Telangana, this is the real test that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is set to face. This is because the municipal elections scheduled to be held on February 11 will be conducted on party symbols. As a result, there is a possibility that the actual strength of each party in the state will now come out clearly. Although the ruling Congress party secured more seats in the recent panchayat elections, since those elections were not held on party symbols, each party is making its own claims. It is well known that the main opposition BRS is also claiming that it won a majority of seats in the panchayat elections. In the municipal elections, there will be no scope for individual claims. Since these elections are being conducted with party symbols, there will be no chance for anyone to make fake claims. The BJP, which could not make much impact in the panchayat elections, appears to have made a stronger effort in the municipal elections. As a result, a three-cornered contest has emerged in these crucial elections.

Along with the ruling Congress, BRS and BJP have focused considerably on these elections. Campaigning for the municipal elections in the state concluded on Monday evening. Elections will be held on the 11th of this month for 116 municipalities and 7 corporations across the state. These elections are being conducted through the ballot system. The results will be announced on February 13. A total of 12,930 candidates are testing their luck in these elections. In general, in any local body elections, the ruling party naturally enjoys some positive sentiment. Moreover, this government is expected to remain in power for nearly another three years. At such a time, people tend to believe that if more opportunities are given to candidates of the ruling party, there will be greater chances for some level of development. However, the main opposition BRS has launched an aggressive campaign targeting the Congress government, especially accusing Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of failing miserably in implementing promises, and claiming that only if Congress is defeated will it benefit the people, and only then will all promises be fulfilled.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has been touring several districts and appealing to voters to compare the ten years of BRS rule with the present governance and cast their votes accordingly. He has also stated that the BJP, which is in power at the Centre, has not done anything specifically for Telangana over the past twelve years, and that voting for that party would be of no use. If the ruling Congress party fails to secure a majority of seats in these municipal elections, there is a possibility that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy may face political difficulties. Since Congress came to power, the party has won the two by-elections held in the state, and as a result, he has not faced major political challenges so far.

However, even a slight deviation in the municipal election results could lead to criticism against Revanth Reddy, and it can be said that even leaders from within his own party are ready to attack him. Not just party leaders, but even his cabinet colleagues may not miss the chance to raise their voices. How Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will overcome this crucial challenge will be known only on February 13. There has long been talk that there is little coordination between Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and key ministers in the government. However, if ministers fail to exert influence in their respective districts, it could politically harm them as well, so the chances of ministers taking risks in this matter are also limited. In any case, the results of these municipal elections are going to be extremely crucial for Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. Even a slight setback will certainly lead to the perception that a difficult political phase has begun for the Congress party.
