The Congress government in Telangana has now completed more than two and a half years in office. Yet, on several key issues, there has been little visible action from the government. Instead, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy continues to make allegations as if he were still in the opposition, critics argue. Revanth Reddy often makes statements suggesting that he will remain in power for another decade. However, political observers are asking whether he will make the same claims during the next election campaign. More importantly, when voters ask what his government has achieved after completing five years in office, what answer will he have?. Questions are also being raised about whether his repeated allegations are aimed solely at political gains rather than protecting public funds or taking action against those responsible for alleged wrongdoing. Comments made by the Chief Minister during his visit to the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district on Friday have once again brought these concerns into focus.
During the tour, Revanth Reddy inspected the works of the Palamuru-Rangareddy and Kalwakurthy lift irrigation projects. Speaking to the media later, he alleged that former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) and his family benefited enormously from the Palamuru-Rangareddy project. He accused the previous government of looting thousands of crores of rupees through commissions and claimed that corruption took place by executing pump and lift works without completing the required land acquisition process. However, critics argue that if the Chief Minister possesses such strong evidence and continues to allege that KCR's family benefited from these projects, then the government should take concrete action. Otherwise, people may begin to suspect that the Congress government and the BRS are working together behind the scenes.
The debate becomes even more significant in the context of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, one of the most expensive infrastructure projects undertaken in Telangana. Revanth Reddy has made numerous allegations regarding irregularities in the project. Yet, critics point out that one of the most crucial aspects of the controversy—the alleged irregularities related to the project's motors—was excluded from the scope of the investigation. The government is also facing criticism for continuing to work with some of the same companies involved in the project. Despite repeated criticism on this issue, the Chief Minister has largely remained silent and has not initiated any major action.
The criticism is not limited to irrigation projects alone. While in the opposition, Revanth Reddy had promised to expose and investigate all alleged corruption and irregularities that occurred during the BRS regime. However, even after coming to power, critics say he continues to speak as though he is still in opposition rather than acting as the head of the government. Some Congress leaders themselves reportedly fear that this approach could politically backfire in the coming years, especially if the government fails to convert its allegations into visible action.
