"Revanth Reddy’s ‘Future City’ Dream: Bold Claims Amid Telangana’s Fiscal Strain"

Update: 2025-09-28 11:44 GMT

The Telangana government is reportedly running out of funds in the state treasury to pay the legally required dues to retired employees. There are no funds available for the DA (Dearness Allowance) that should be given to employees. Fee reimbursement arrears run into thousands of crores. Hospitals are yet to receive payments for providing medical services under the Aarogyasri scheme, and these arrears too amount to thousands of crores. All these issues emerged after the Congress government came to power in Telangana. These are not problems created by CM Revanth Reddy; they are inherited from the ten years of BRS rule. The Congress government is struggling to resolve them. From small contractors to large ones, there is no money to settle the bills for work completed. Apart from these, many other issues remain unresolved in Telangana. Several election promises made by the Congress are still pending. When in opposition, Revanth Reddy had claimed that if the corruption in KCR's government was stopped, all their promises could easily be implemented. But after coming to power, two years will soon be completed, and the situation hasn’t changed much.

Now, CM Revanth Reddy, with his plans for a Future City that would resemble New York, is asking, "How long will we keep talking about Singapore, Dubai, and New York?" He made these comments after laying the foundation stone for the Future City Development Authority building on Sunday. He declared that if he is given ten years, people from abroad will come to India and praise the Future City of India. After Telangana became a separate state, even KCR, who was in power for ten years, made similar promises, saying he would turn Karimnagar into London and develop the Old City like Istanbul. Everyone knows what KCR actually did in ten years. Now, Congress leaders are commenting that CM Revanth Reddy's promises are even bolder than KCR's. How will Revanth Reddy build the Future City? There will be no new government buildings, except for a few. If government lands are handed over to IT companies and other private enterprises, they will only establish offices there. So what kind of city will Revanth Reddy actually build?

Apart from providing basic infrastructure on the selected thousands of acres, the government won’t be constructing anything new. However, CM Revanth Reddy repeatedly claims that he is going to build a city. Any government can set big goals, but the real question here is: Do we have the right conditions and resources to achieve these massive goals? On one hand, the CM himself says the situation is dire and there is no money, while on the other hand, he is promising to build a city that will rival New York, Dubai, and Singapore. This raises doubts about the feasibility of the plan. For a planned city to be developed, what is essential are the basic infrastructural facilities. The government's plan is to allot government land, including land for IT and other private firms, and give it to corporate companies. This is what has been happening since the united state and after the bifurcation. Now, the Future City that CM Revanth Reddy is planning will follow the same pattern, as revealed by a senior IAS officer.
