YSRCP president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy made sensational remarks on the issue of the state's capital. He made it clear that his party remains committed to the Mavigan model of capital. He said the next Assembly elections would also be fought as Amaravati vs Mavigan. Jagan stated that only those who support the Mavigan slogan would vote for the YSRCP. He also announced that the Mavigan model would be included in the party's election manifesto and said, "Let us see who has the people's support." He asserted that Mavigan would be completed without any corruption. Jagan Mohan Reddy made these remarks while speaking to the media at his residence in Tadepalli on Wednesday. He alleged that there is no law and order in the state and claimed that Andhra Pradesh is witnessing "anarchic rule" under what he described as the "Red Book Constitution."
Interestingly, while reiterating that the YSRCP's policy is Mavigan, Jagan also said that his party is not opposed to Amaravati itself, but only to the corruption allegedly taking place there. These seemingly contradictory statements have raised questions over whether Jagan himself is confused or is attempting to confuse the public. The coalition government in Andhra Pradesh is currently undertaking various capital development works in Amaravati, including the construction of iconic towers, with an estimated investment of nearly ₹60,000 crore. Despite this, Jagan Mohan Reddy has reiterated that Mavigan remains his party's policy, making the issue politically significant once again. Meanwhile, the Union government has amended the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act to officially include Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. Even so, Jagan has made it clear that he is not willing to compromise on the capital issue.
Jagan Mohan Reddy has also signalled that if the YSRCP returns to power in the next elections, Amaravati will not continue as the state's capital. At the same time, there is growing discussion that the ongoing capital works in Amaravati are not progressing at the expected pace. There are concerns that, at this rate, not only the iconic towers but several other capital projects may not be completed as scheduled. Leaders within the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) are also said to believe that if there is a change in government after the next elections, the entire capital issue could once again return to square one. Although Amaravati has been officially declared the capital of Andhra Pradesh through an amendment passed by Parliament, Jagan has announced that the YSRCP will contest the next elections with the capital issue as one of its key agenda points. This marks a new political twist in Andhra Pradesh politics.
