TDP President and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu appears to be sticking to his old style of functioning. Following the announcement of the Telugu Desam Party's Rajya Sabha candidates, discussions are underway within political circles that Naidu has not changed his traditional approach to decision-making. While national parties such as the BJP and Congress announced their Rajya Sabha candidates well in advance, Chandrababu Naidu officially revealed the TDP nominees only on Saturday night, just two days before the nomination deadline. What is noteworthy, however, is that two of the three candidates announced by the party had already been the subject of media speculation for nearly two months. The names of Sana Satish and Bhashyam Ramakrishna had been circulating in political and party circles for quite some time, with many believing that both were certain to secure Rajya Sabha nominations.
The name of Chintakayala Vijay emerged prominently only in recent days. In short, there were no major surprises in the list of candidates officially announced by the TDP. Yet, many observers find it surprising that Chandrababu Naidu took so long to finalize and announce the names. At the same time, party insiders say the selection of the Rajya Sabha candidates clearly reflects the influence of TDP Working President Nara Lokesh. Discussions within the party suggest that Lokesh's imprint is visible throughout the entire selection process. Speculation about Sana Satish receiving another term had been ongoing for quite some time. One of the primary reasons cited was his close association with Nara Lokesh. Since his previous Rajya Sabha tenure was relatively short, many believed he would be given another opportunity. That prediction has now proved accurate.
Similarly, Bhashyam Ramakrishna's name had been in circulation for months. Although he has not been directly involved in party activities on a large scale, party sources have long maintained that he would be rewarded for the services he has rendered to the party behind the scenes. Party insiders had suggested that the contest for the seat was mainly between former MP Galla Jayadev and Bhashyam Ramakrishna. In the end, however, the party leadership chose Bhashyam Ramakrishna over Galla Jayadev. According to party leaders, both Sana Satish and Bhashyam Ramakrishna are close associates of Nara Lokesh. They say the relationship extends beyond politics and that both share a special personal bond with him. The third candidate, Chintakayala Vijay, has been actively involved in party activities from the beginning. He previously handled responsibilities in the party's social media wing, ITDP, and currently serves as a State General Secretary. Vijay has long been considered part of Nara Lokesh's core team.
Overall, party leaders believe the influence of Nara Lokesh is clearly visible in the selection of all three Rajya Sabha candidates. They point out that even during the recent appointments to key party positions, Lokesh's team received significant representation. Now, with all three Rajya Sabha seats reportedly going to individuals associated with Lokesh's camp, many within the party feel it demonstrates just how powerful he has become. One minister reportedly remarked that the developments clearly show the growing influence of Nara Lokesh within both the party and the government. The Rajya Sabha is traditionally regarded as the House of Elders. Against that backdrop, some party leaders have expressed surprise that Chintakayala Vijay, who is not yet 45 years old, has been nominated to the Upper House.
While there is no doubt that he has worked for the party for many years, some believe awarding him a Rajya Sabha seat at this stage is somewhat unexpected. A senior leader reportedly opined that Chandrababu Naidu might have preferred former minister Varla Ramaiah for the position. While some argue that Ramaiah may not have been considered because his son is already an MLA, others point out that Chintakayala Vijay's father, Ayyannapatrudu, currently holds the highly influential position of Speaker. Taken together, these developments are being viewed by many within the TDP itself as evidence of the extent of Nara Lokesh's influence in both the party organization and the state government.
