Election to the Nadigar Sangam, one of the most influential entities in Tamil Nadu representing film and theatre artistes, was won by the rival team, Pandavar Ani, defeating the incumbent president Sarath Kumar and general secretary Radha Ravi. While Nasser, an actor known for his progressive stand, defeated actor-cum-politician Sarath Kumar with 1,344 votes against 1,231, Radha Ravi — actor and brother-in-law of Sarath Kumar also defeated by Vishal, a 38-year-old Tamil actor, who led the team challenging the incumbent dispensation.
While both Nasser and Vishal won the top posts of the film body, all other candidates of Pandavar Ani were leading at the time of filing this report. Vishal was elected as Nadigar Sangam general secretary, with 1,445 votes against 1,138 votes of Radha Ravi. Earlier in the day, actor Vishal was allegedly manhandled by Sarath Kumar and his men inside the booth. Immediately after the mild scuffle, Vishal was rushed for medical help. Sarathkumar, however, denied the allegation.
The election, which was monitored by the High Court appointed retired judge E Padmanabhan, had a largest turnout for elections, more than 83 per cent.Sarathkumar said, “I congratulate them for this democratic win. Victories and defeats will come and go. It was a tough fight. We should overcome the animosity and look to work together. I will be happy to offer my suggestions, if they ask me.” About 83 per cent of the Nadigar Sangam’s 3,139 members cast their votes.
