TDP seeks Bharat Ratna for NTR

The Telugu Desam Party’s annual three-day convention Mahanadu, presently meeting in Visakhapatnam has stepped up its demand for the highest civilian award of the country `Bharat Ratna’ for its founder N T Rama Rao posthumously.  As the the party need to face elections in two years, it seems the leadership is making hectic efforts to rouse Telugu sentiments over NTR once again to catch imagination of the people.

The plea gains ground in the TDP rank and file close on the heels of the erstwhile Congress-led UPA regime played with Tamil sentiment by honouring MG Ramachandran posthumously with the same award. In his inaugural address itself, party supremo and AP Chief Minister N Chadnrababu Naidu made an earnest appeal to the Centre to present the highest honour ot his mentor and the departed leader.

The Mahanadu passed a resolution in this regard on the second day as part of paying glorious tributes to the party founder on his 94th birth anniversary. For the six time, the party Mahanadu had adopted a resolution favouring the county’s highest honour to the party founder. The current Mahanadu went a step ahead seeking to launch a signature campaign, exerting pressure on the Centre.
When state government media advisor Dr Parakala Prabhakar moved a resolution in this regard, a section of the party leaders objected expressing surprise when Dr Prabhakar became TDP member and with what authority he can move a resolution in the part event. However, Chandrababu Naidu pacified them by stating that as the nomination itself is an political appointment, he should be treated as part of the party.
