Jayalalithaa elected as legislature party leader, Panneerselvam resigned

In Tamil Nadu, AIADMK supremo Ms. Jayalalithaa was elected as the legislature party leader at a meeting in Chennai this morning. The meeting was a mere formality and concluded in 10 minutes. The MLAs of the ruling party unanimously elected Ms. Jayalalithaa as their leader. A letter to this effect will be handed over to Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden residence.Meanwhile, the present Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam met the Governor Mr. Konijeti Rosaiah and handed over his resignation. Later, Ms Jayalalithaa is likely to meet the Governor at Raj Bhavan and stake the claim to form the government.

The swearing in ceremony of Ms Jayalalithaa is likely to be held tomorrow in Chennai. The party headquarters is in a celebration mood where party cadres from across the state are bursting crackers and beating drums. They are also eager to meet their leader as Ms. Jayalalithaa will make a public appearance after a gap of six months in the afternoon as she will garland the statues of leaders including party founder MGR.Ms Jayalalithaa is likely to seek re-election from RK Nagar constituency in Chennai which was left vacant recently following the resignation of AIADMK’s Mr Vetrivel. Decks were cleared for Ms Jayalalithaa ’s return after the Karnataka High court acquitted her in the 19-year old DA Case recently. Jayalalithaa was forced to step down as the Chief Minister in September 2014 after a trial court convicted and sentenced her to four years in jail in the case.
