Creating a big blow to the Telangana state government’s move for large scale land acquisition, the Hyderabad High Court today issued a stay order on land acquisition for projects under GO 123.The court directed it not to acquire lands for various irrigation projects under the State government order. The High Court, in its interim order, said lands should not be acquired under Government Order (GO) 123.
A large number of farmers from Medak district approached High Court challenging an earlier order of a division bench allowing the government to take away lands as per GO 123 which supersedes a 2013 ordinance. The government issued GO 123 for the acquisition of land for various projects including Mallanna Sagar, Palamuru, Ranga Reddy lift irrigation, etc.
However, the government argued that the court that it is taking lands only from those who are coming forward voluntarily. It also pleaded that it is paying more compensation than under the 2013 act. But farmers complained that the terms of payment of compensation for their lands as per GO 123 were against their interests and it was forcible acquisition.
The government had earlier issued GO 123 for the acquisition of land for various projects including Mallanna Sagar, Palamuru, Ranga Reddy lift irrigation, etc. But after sensing Court’s ire, the government had deferred earlier to be issued again.
