Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam will be meeting his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu at the Interim Government Complex (IGC) in Velagapudi this afternoon. For the first time, a Temil Nadu Chief Minister is visiting Andhra Pradesh Secretariat to meet its Chief Minister. Though he is said to be meeting to request Naidu for immediate water through Telugu Ganga project for drinking needs of the residents of Chennai, the meeting is also gaining some political significance.
The political uncertainty prevailed in the ruling party of Tamil Nadu and arrest of former TTD Trustee Board Member Sekhar Reddy, who is said to be close associate of both the Chief Ministers is likely to come up for discussion. Though the Andhra Pradesh Government is said to be ready to release water for Chennai, it is insisting for payment of pending dues amounting to Rs 400 crore.
It may be recalled that in early 80s Chief Ministers of both the states, N T Rama Rao and M G Ramachadnran, have entered into an agreement for bearing the expenditure of the Telugu Ganga Canal that takes water from Kandaleru Reservoir in Nellore district to Poondi reservoir on the outskirts of Chennai city on a 50-50 basis, the Tamil Nadu government should release the funds.
